“As I get closer I notice that they showing each other sketches
Out of their notebooks, reminded me of my old roots
I walk pass with a nod and a reminisce
Swear to god hip hop and comic books was my genesis”

Saga Chapter One

Saga

One day last month I saw an ad for this comic online and I was intrigued by the cover I clicked. The very short description I saw explained that it was a sci-fi and fantasy story about two parents raising a baby during a never ending galactic war.

If you expect it to be like anything else you’ve ever seen before, you’d probably be wrong.

The very first page grabs your attention and tells you, this is different.

The story starts with a birth, gives some background on the world(s) in which the characters live, and leaves you wondering what more this world has in store and what our characters will do to survive and protect their newborn child.

Obviously I don’t want to spoil the whole story so I haven’t said too much, but out of all the comics I’ve read lately, this one has really stuck with me and left me wanting more.

If you need any convincing that this is a fun read, Chapter One is a double sized issue with no ads at regular price.

Saga #2 comes out April 11th, as well as the 3rd reprinting of issue #1.

This week Swamp Thing #8 comes out, which I am also excited for, #7 ended just right note. Too bad it took 7 issues for that transformation, but with Yanick Paquette’s stunning art it’s easy to get past the slow pace the story has taken up to this point. Anyway, I am still excited for it. I’m a little more excited for Saga, but still, I’m already 7 issues deep in Swamp Thing, I feel invested. Seriously though Yanick Paquette has some of the greatest art in comics right now.

This morning I woke up with the song Deltron 3030 stuck in my head, from the album of the same name by the artist of the same name aka Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. It got me to thinking about how I got into hip-hop and how I once hated the genre based on what I saw / heard of rap, particularly of the 50 Cent / Eminem variety. I was introduced to the Gorillaz first album in 2002, and being that it was the first, instead of looking up Damon Albarns bands, I looked up all the rappers on the album. That’s how I found Deltron, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Dr. Octogon and Lovage.

(side note: Deltron: Event II is supposedly finally coming out this summer)

The next year, I was introduced to both Atmosphere and Sage Francis, from an unlikely Place, Punk O Rama.

Punk O Rama 8

Well, after that my musical tastes grew, I found many great artists and realized you should not judge a genre by it’s most popular acts. (Except anything branded Emo released after 2000, you can judge that by all means.)

I am thinking of placing a “What I am listening to” section on the sidebar, but then again, that’s something I have probably tried to do on every blog I ever had, and the problem is always the same, I never have enough time to update it. So I am thinking I could do music reviews. Sometimes. I don’t want to pin my blog down to any one thing, after all it’s supposed to be about what I like. What do you think?

So I think I will review my favorite comics, books, and CD’s as I read and listen to them. And I want to post pictures. Grammar be dammed, I’m going to say and do what I want with this blog, and this post should be a good example of what I want it to be like and where I want it to go from here.

Next on my list of things to do, I am going to start Carpathia, write some thoughts about B. Dolan’s Sunken House Fallen City album that I have been listening to lately, and at some point I might want to talk about Watchmen. I’ve been digesting that one one chapter at a time.

I will still write about my life a bit too, because this is a chronicle of me, so deal with it. This week I have two days off for my wife’s birthday! I’m excited! We haven’t decided what we’re doing yet, but two days off with my wife is a good thing no matter what.

On a final note, today was April Fools day. I played no jokes, but my favorite joke of the day is Google Maps for NES (with working demo). Have fun 🙂
